DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW STATEMENT

The Maths Department is a fantastic place to work: the staff are a group of hard-working and committed teachers who all have, at the very heart of their practice and approach, a belief in valuing each student and giving them the very best educational opportunities that the school can offer.

The excellent results achieved in August 2016 bear out the reality that the Maths Department is constantly striving to build on the successes and improve.

PROGRAMMES OF STUDY – TOPICS/CURRICULUM BY YEAR GROUP DETAILS

In Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8) students follow a balanced mathematics curriculum that covers the areas of number; algebra; ratio, proportion and rates of change; geometry and measures; probability; and statistics.

In Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11) students follow the new GCSE specification at either Higher or Foundation tier.

In Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13) students follow the new A’ Level math’s specification which is comprised of three main topic areas, core, statistics and mechanics.

ENRICHMENT

In addition to the teaching of Math’s, the department also runs enrichment activities such as the UK Junior Math’s Challenge and organises trips to places with a mathematical history such as Bletchley Park.

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD

Ensure students complete past examination papers.
Ensure key terms to be revised.

Encourage the use of GCSEpod and SAM Learning
Encourage the use of the Mymaths website.
Encourage the use of other Maths websites.

Ensure homework tasks are completed regularly and on time.

Intervention

We have an extensive suite of intervention programmes that we use to support vulnerable cohorts of Year 11.  These include maths based tutor groups, out of school hours sessions and a revision residential.
