This course uses one option choice and is equivalent to 1 GCSE grade A* to G.

The options offered in this area conform to the Technology National Curriculum.  The courses are produced to enable students to work in areas which they find stimulating and of personal interest.  Students are able to develop both knowledge and understanding in their chosen areas of study within the Design Framework, thus producing a quality finished product.

How is the course structured?

All candidates will study the following areas regardless of which course they choose to undertake.

  • Existing products and their application(s).
  • The study of the design and manufacturing processes of existing products to distinguish good from poor quality.
  • Understanding and use of different types of systems and methods of control.
  • The study of energy, its uses, conversion and conservation.
  • The use and application of Information Technology, using a variety of different software.
  • The development and application of Design thinking and Communication skills.
  • The development and application of manufacturing skills: the use of different materials, tools and equipment relevant to the students’ chosen area of study.
  • Health & Safety considerations including a designer’s responsibility, good working practice and risk assessment.
