At Key Stage 3 students undertaking the Alternative Curriculum follow a series of ASDAN short courses. These allow students to gather credits towards passing their courses at key Stage 4. During Years 7-8 students will undertake: Creative Arts , Sport and Fitness, PHSE Award, Roadwise , Creative Arts and Sport and Fitness.
The Alternative Curriculum at KS4 had four main components:
ASDAN Wider Key Skills
ASDAN Personal and Social Development
The Prince’s Trust xlClub
The Alternative Curriculum Department has an excellent record of results with 96% of students passing CoPE at Level 2 last year. The department achieved a 100% pass rate for those entered on other components of the course.
The high level of success is, in part, due to the dedication of staff involved and the excellent relationship that we have with our students in smaller group situations.
Special Skill Acquisition Events
Motivation is also achieved through our excellent links with Rushall Farm, where students undertake a series of visits throughout the year including a residential in Year 10 and involvement in the farm’s lambing weekends. Activities undertaken include be keeping, lambing, woodland management, flying hawks, river studies and archery. In addition the department provides driving lessons for students undertaking the Wider Key Skills programme as experience in this area can be submitted for the unit ‘Improving Own Learning’.
